Four American troops have been killed in what's being reported as a mortar attack on the US military's Bagram air base in Afghanistan. It struck on the day that NATO officially handed over security responsibility to Afghan authorities – the latest move ahead of a full troops withdrawal at the end of next year. But as insurgents take more soldiers' lives, Washington is setting out to peace talks with the Taliban. They will take place on Thursday in the group's first overseas office which has been opened in Qatar.
