Why Are So Many Americans In Prison?

Via Al Jazeera English:

The US has the highest prison population in the world – some of whom  have been subjected to lengthy sentences for relatively minor crimes.  And that population has surged over the past three decades.

Although there has been a slight reduction in the past year, more  than two million people are either incarcerated in prison or in jail  awaiting trial.

The US has the highest rate of imprisonment in  the world, with 743 people incarcerated for every 100,000 Americans. No  other nation even comes close to these figures.

One explanation for the boom in the prison population is the mandatory sentencing imposed for drug offences and the “tough on crime” attitude that has prevailed since the 1980s.

But it is the length of sentences that truly distinguishes US prison policy. Some prisoners are locked up for life – literally – and many receive harsh sentences for non-violent crime.

These long sentences are leading to an ageing prison population – with eight per cent of prisoners now over the age of 55. This, in turn, is increasing the burden of providing healthcare and geriatric services.

Furthermore, nearly 40 per cent of the US prison population is African-American, despite the fact that blacks make up only 12 per cent of the national population.

A black male is seven times more likely to be imprisoned than a white male.

Mental health issues and drug addiction are also common and, in California alone, it is believed that around 50 per cent of inmates need mental health treatment.

So why does the US have the highest rate of documented incarceration in the world? And does its approach to crime and punishment work or would a focus on rehabilitation be more effective?…

19 Facts About Abortion In America That Should Make You Very Sick

Every single day, a silent horror kills more Americans than were killed on 9/11.  Every single year, this silent horror kills about as many Americans as have been killed on all the battlefields in all of the wars in U.S. history combined.  This silent horror is called abortion, and it is a national disgrace.  Overall, more than 50 million babies have been slaughtered since Roe v. Wade was decided in 1973.  We have become a nation with so little regard for human life that nobody even really talks that much about this issue anymore.  But the truth is that it is at the very core of what is wrong with America.  As I have written about previously, we have become a nation that is obsessed with population control, and we have been exporting this sick philosophy all over the globe.  As you read this, there are workers from U.S. organizations and UN organizations (both funded by your tax dollars) that are on the other side of the world setting up "family planning services" for women in poor countries.  The goal of these organizations (just like we see in the United States) is to reduce the number of poor children being born.  The sick control freaks that run things have decided that overpopulation is a plague that must be eradicated and that mass murder is the answer.  Unfortunately, there are very few people that are still willing to speak out strongly against abortion in America.  So the carnage is just going to go on and on and on.

What will the history books say about a nation that murdered 50 million of its own babies?

The following are 19 facts about abortion in America that should make you very sick....

#1 There have been more than 53 million abortions performed in the United States since Roe v. Wade was decided back in 1973.

#2 When you total up all forms of abortion, including those caused by the abortion drug RU 486, the grand total comes to more than a million abortions performed in the United States every single year.

#3 The number of American babies killed by abortion each year is roughly equal to the number of U.S. military deaths that have occurred in all of the wars that the United States has ever been involved in combined.

#4 Approximately 3,000 Americans lost their lives as a result of the destruction of the World Trade Center towers on 9/11.  Every single day, more than 3,000 American babies are killed by abortion.

#5 It has been reported that a staggering 41 percent of all New York City pregnancies end in abortion.

#6 According to Pastor Clenard Childress, approximately 52 percent of all African-American pregnancies now end in abortion.

#7 One very shocking study found that 86 percent of all abortions are done for the sake of convenience.

#8 According to the Guttmacher Institute, the average cost of a first trimester abortion at the ten week mark is $451.

#9 The average cost of a vaginal birth with no complications in the United States is now over $9,000.

#10 A Department of Homeland Security report that was released in January 2012 says that if you are "anti-abortion", you are a potential terrorist.  Unfortunately, there have also been other government reports that have also identified "anti-abortion" protesters as potential threats.

#11 A while back one Philadelphia abortionist was charged with killing seven babies that were born alive, but witnesses claim that he actually slaughtered hundreds "of living, breathing newborn children by severing their spinal cords or slitting their necks."

#12 Some abortion clinics have been caught selling aborted baby parts to medical researchers.

#13 Planned Parenthood Founder Margaret Sanger once said the following....

"The most merciful thing that a family does to one of its infant members is to kill it."

#14 In a 1922 book entitled "Woman, Morality, and Birth Control", Planned Parenthood Founder Margaret Sanger wrote the following....

"Birth control must lead ultimately to a cleaner race."

#15 Planned Parenthood performs more than 300,000 abortions every single year.

#16 Planned Parenthood specifically targets the poor.  A staggering 72 percent of Planned Parenthood's "customers" have incomes that are either equal to or beneath 150 percent of the federal poverty level.

#17 There are 30 Planned Parenthood executives that make more than $200,000 a year.  A few of them make more than $300,000 a year.

#18 Planned Parenthood received more than 487 million dollars from the federal government during 2010.

#19 The following is one description of the five steps of a partial birth abortion....

1) Guided by ultrasound, the abortionist grabs the baby's legs with forceps.

2) The baby's leg is pulled out into the birth canal.

3) The abortionist delivers the baby's entire body, except for the head.

4) The abortionist jams scissors into the baby's skull. The scissors are then opened to enlarge the skull.

5) The scissors are removed and a suction catheter is inserted. The child's brains are sucked out, causing the skull to collapse. The dead baby is then removed.

How can we murder our own children?

Unfortunately, there are organizations out there such as Planned Parenthood that spend millions upon millions of dollars trying to convince the American people that abortion is okay.  Just check out this jaw dropping propaganda video.

And every single year, politicians from both political parties continue to vote to give hundreds of millions of our tax dollars to Planned Parenthood.

Our politicians talk about how we need to spread our values to the rest of the world, but what kind of "values" do we really have when we have such little respect for human life?

There is no hope for America as long as this mass slaughter of innocent children continues to go on all across the United States.

Please share this list of facts about abortion in America with as many people as you can.  We need to wake the American people up.  Most Americans spend their days in an entertainment-induced haze and take very little time to think about the issues that really matter.

And if you think that the issue of abortion does not matter, then you are dead wrong.

The mass murder of more than 50 million American babies is something that cannot be ignored.

Their blood is crying out to us from the ground where it has been spilled.

Yes, this article is going to make a lot of people uncomfortable, but it is the truth.

Isn't it time that someone started telling the truth in America?

Student Protests For A New Society In Chile

Al Jazeera’s Fault Lines visits Chile to look at the student uprisings that have been going on for months. Students have taken over and occupied schools and universities — in opposition to the prohibitively expensive, poor-quality education system and politicians who say that their main priority is to provide “certainty for investors”. Does Chile’s extremely privatized, class-segregated education system provide a warning of where the United States could be headed?

What Are We Going To Do If The Number Of American Adults That Can’t Take Care Of Themselves Continues To Set New Records?

Today, the number of American adults that can't take care of themselves is at an all-time record high.  So what are we going to do if the number of people dependent on the government keeps going up?  Some folks like to point out that most Americans that have recently become dependent on the government would rather be working, but because of a lack of jobs they have gotten into a position where they cannot take care of themselves anymore.  Some other folks like to point out that the number of Americans that abuse the system and that enjoy being dependent on the government is steadily increasing.  Sadly, both of those positions are true.  It is a fact that the percentage of working age Americans that actually have jobs has declined dramatically over the past several years because of a lack of jobs.  It is also a fact that a growing percentage of Americans believe that it is the job of the government to take care of them from the cradle to the grave.  What people need to understand is that the government is the problem and not the solution.  We desperately need more jobs in this country, but the federal government has been absolutely killing job growth, it has been creating a culture of government dependency, and it has been going into gigantic amounts of debt trying to take care of so many people.  So what are we going to do if the number of American adults that can't take care of themselves continues to set new records year after year?

Of course most Americans that are dependent on the government are not actually trying to abuse the system.  Most are in that situation because they cannot find a decent job.

As you can see from the chart below, in the post-World War II era whenever a recession has ended the percentage of working age Americans that have jobs has rebounded substantially.  But this has not happened this time....

The employment-population ratio fell to levels not seen since the early 1980s and has stayed there.

During the 70s, 80s and 90s the employment-population ratio kept increasing because a lot of women were entering the workforce.

But now our economy is not producing nearly enough jobs for everyone.  Our economy is dying and the labor market has come to resemble a really bizarre game of musical chairs.

If you lose your job in this economy, you might be out of the game for good.

If you can believe it, today there are 100 million working age Americans that do not have jobs.

In all, there are 242 million working age Americans.

Only 142 million of them actually have jobs.

The rest are either taken care of by someone else in their family or by the government.

Since the year 2000, the U.S. population has increased by over 30 million.

But the number of Americans that have jobs has only risen by 4.7 million.

Something doesn't add up.

The federal government keeps telling us that the employment situation is getting better, but the only way they can do that is by pretending that millions of Americans are "leaving the labor force".

Between 2000 and 2011, the federal government says that the number of Americans "not in the labor force" rose by 17.9 million.

But during the entire decade of the 1980s the number of Americans "not in the labor force" rose by only 1.7 million.

Yes, there is something really fishy going on with the employment numbers.

And the percentage of the "working poor" in America has been steadily rising as well.

Back in 1980, less than 30% of all jobs in the United States were low income jobs.  Today, more than 40% of all jobs in the United States are low income jobs.

Millions upon millions of Americans that actually do have jobs are still not able to take care of themselves and are dependent on the government.

If something is not done to reverse these labor trends, the number of American adults that can't take care of themselves is going to continue to set new records.

Today, over 70 percent of all spending by the federal government goes into dependence programs, and the amount of money that the federal government sends directly to American citizens has increased by 32 percent since Barack Obama took office.

Just about every measure of government dependence that is out there is going up rapidly.  Just consider the following stats....

*Federal housing assistance increased by a whopping 42 percent between 2006 and 2010.

*Medicare spending increased by 138 percent between 1999 and 2010.

*Back in 1965, only one out of every 50 Americans was on Medicaid.  Today, one out of every 6 Americans is on Medicaid, and things are about to get a whole lot worse.  It is being projected that Obamacare will add 16 million more Americans to the Medicaid rolls.

*Back in 1990, the federal government accounted for 32 percent of all health care spending in America.  Today, that figure is up to 45 percent and it is projected to surpass 50 percent very shortly.

*By the end of 2011, approximately 55 million Americans received a total of approximately 727 billion dollars in Social Security benefits.  As the retirement crisis becomes much worse, that dollar figure is projected to absolutely skyrocket.

*The number of Americans on food stamps recently set a new all-time record.  Right now, more than one out of every seven American citizens is on food stamps and one out of every four U.S. children is on food stamps.   The number of Americans on food stamps has risen by more than 14 million since Barack Obama first entered the White House.

*According to the Heritage Foundation, more than 91 million Americans are financially dependent on the federal government at this point.

*According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 49 percent of all Americans live in a home that receives direct monetary benefits from the federal government.  Back in 1983, less than a third of all Americans lived in a home that received direct monetary benefits from the federal government.

*When you total it all up, American households are now receiving more money directly from the federal government than they are paying to the government in taxes.

As you can see, the number of Americans that are receiving goodies from the federal government is rapidly increasing.

Meanwhile, the number of Americans that are working good jobs and paying taxes to support these programs has been going down.

If this continues, at some point the safety net will break.

And we need a safety net.  There are always going to be some people who do not have the capacity to take care of themselves.  We certainly don't want to see anyone sleeping in the streets or starving to death.

But the tens of millions of additional Americans that have jumped on to the safety net in recent years are endangering the entire system.  Our country is rapidly going broke and if the entire safety net collapses those that really need the help are not going to be able to get it.

In the end, what we really need in this country are tens of millions of additional good jobs.  But our politicians continue to pass mountains of job killing new laws, and our big corporations continue to ship millions of our jobs out of the country.

If we stay on this road, the number of Americans that can't take care of themselves is going to keep setting new records every single year.

And for the rest of us, let us never look down on those that are dependent on the government.  The truth is that the vast majority of us are just a few really bad breaks away from losing everything.

Have You Ever….

Have you ever wondered what our world is going to look like five or ten years down the road?  Well, today our world is changing at a pace that is faster than ever before, and the decisions that we all make right now are going to have a dramatic affect on the years ahead.  In many ways, 2012 represents a huge turning point for America.  There will be a presidential election, 33 seats in the U.S. Senate will be contested and every single seat in the U.S. House of Representatives will be up for grabs.  But the changes that are happening in America go much deeper than politics.  Anger and frustration are growing to frightening levels, and we have become a deeply divided nation.  Our affluence is rapidly crumbling and our national values are being transformed at a staggering pace.  America is drowning in debt, addicted to entertainment and full of people that think they know it all.  America is arrogant, cocky, smug, brash and full of pride.  But if we continue down the road that we are currently on, we will be greatly humbled someday.  It is just a matter of time.

In life, sometimes the questions are almost more important than the answers.

A good question can get you to focus on something you may not have considered before.

A good question can often get you to look at things at an entirely new angle.

Our nation is in big trouble and we desperately need to start making better decisions while there is still time.

Hopefully the questions below will cause you to do some thinking.  I know that they caused me to do some thinking....

Have you ever noticed that a lot of countries are now quietly talking about paying for oil in something other than U.S. dollars?

Have you ever wondered why top officials in the government get away with so much?  Right now, 36 top officials in the Obama administration owe a combined $833,000 in back taxes.  How in the world can they get away with that?  And why don't they pay their "fair share" before trying to convince the rest of us that we need to pay more taxes?

Have you ever wondered how it is possible that the federal government has been operating without an approved budget for over 1000 days?

Have you ever taken the time to read some of the foreclosure horror stories that are out there on the Internet?  Some of them are absolutely nightmarish.  It kind of makes you wonder why anyone would ever want to buy a house.

Have you ever wondered why so many Tea Party Republicans are voting for Newt Gingrich?  Considering the fact that he endorsed Obamacare a few years ago and considering the fact that he has been promoting individual health care mandates for years, it is amazing that any Republican is willing to vote for the guy.

Have you ever wondered why so many Tea Party Republicans are voting for Mitt Romney?  When he was governor of Massachusetts, he created Romneycare (which is what the plan for Obamacare was based upon) and he appointed large numbers of radical leftists to the judiciary in Massachusetts.

Have you ever wondered why Wall Street is pouring such a massive amount of money into Mitt Romney's campaign?

Have you ever noticed that the EU seems to hold a lot of "summits" but that nothing actually ever seems to get accomplished?

Have you ever noticed how almost everyone in America is scared to death of getting sued?  No wonder people dislike lawyers so much.

Have you ever wondered why the Department of Homeland Security is so obsessed with monitoring Twitter?

Have you ever noticed that many major U.S. cities have become very unpleasant places in which to live?

Have you ever wondered why we didn't build wider roads?  Most of our cities are terribly congested.  Each year, a total of approximately 4.8 billion hours are wasted on the roads of America due to traffic congestion.

Have you ever why so many Americans are constantly doped up on prescription drugs?  The percentage of Americans that say that they have taken two or more prescription drugs within the last month has risen to 31 percent, and the percentage of Americans that say that they have taken five or more prescription drugs within the last month has risen to 11 percent.

Have you ever noticed that the term "perfect storm" is being used a lot more frequently these days?

Have you ever noticed that virtually nobody in Washington D.C. is much concerned about China's rapidly rising military strength?

Have you ever noticed that even European newspapers admit that Barack Obama is trying to turn the United States into a European-style socialist welfare state?

Have you ever noticed that the mainstream media avoids certain stories almost completely?  For example, a judge in Massachusetts recently ordered a 32-year-old pregnant woman to undergo a forced abortion and also ordered her to be sterilized.  The mainstream media ignored the story almost entirely.  Fortunately that decision was later reversed, but it is kind of frightening that a story like that did not make more national headlines.

Have you ever noticed that the FDA spends a massive amount of time and resources persecuting those that promote natural cures?  For example, the FDA recently sent in U.S. marshals to raid one company that was selling elderberry juice concentrate.

Have you ever wondered why information about natural substances that have been shown to fight cancer is suppressed in the United States?

Have you ever wondered who makes all that cheap plastic crap from China that fills our store shelves?  It turns out that working conditions are so nightmarish in many of those factories that many of the workers end up committing suicide.

Have you ever wondered why prominent news anchors such as Erin Burnett would call China "our greatest friend"?

Have you ever wondered why all of the big websites that protested SOPA so vigorously are not saying much about ACTA at all?

Have you ever wondered why U.S. state governments spend millions of dollars to train workers for big corporations?

Have you ever wondered how the area along the U.S. border with Mexico got to be one of the most dangerous places on earth?

Have you ever noticed how many of the latest Bible versions go to extreme lengths to avoid offending anyone?  It is almost as if those translating these Bibles are actually embarrassed of Christianity.

Have you ever wondered why America imprisons far more people than anyone else in the world?

Have you ever wondered why Greece is in such a financial mess?  Maybe it is because government officials in Greece do not seem to have any common sense.  According to the New York Times, the following categories of people are now considered to be "disabled" in Greece and can receive financial benefits from the government: pedophiles, exhibitionists, kleptomaniacs, pyromaniacs, compulsive gamblers, fetishists and sadomasochists.

Have you ever wondered why gang activity is increasing so dramatically in America?  It is estimated that there are 68,000 gang members living in the city of Chicago alone.

Have you ever wondered why more than 10,000,000 guns were sold in the United States during 2011?

Have you ever wondered how America would be different if we had not killed more than 50 million babies since Roe vs. Wade was decided back in 1973?

Have you ever wondered why so many young children drop dead or become severely disabled shortly after getting injected with vaccines?

Have you ever wondered why we don't hear more about all the scientists that believe that man-made global warming is a hoax in the mainstream media?

Have you ever wondered why we can't find a home for all Americans since there are far more vacant homes in America than there are homeless people?

Have you ever wondered what would happen if Barack Obama actually got thrown off the ballot in Georgia?

Have you ever wondered what life would be like without the Internet?  Every single minute, 168 million emails are sent.  What would we do without all that email?

Have you ever wondered why so many Americans are busy preparing for the collapse of civilization?

Have you ever wondered if this is the year when we will see a war with Iran erupt in the Middle East?

So do you think that you have answers to the questions above?

Please feel free to share your thoughts by leaving a comment below....

Feds: Megaupload user files may be deleted starting Thursday

The US Attorney’s Office leading the prosecution of Megaupload founder Kim Dotocm and his associates has told the court that the companies hosting Megaupload data might begin deleting data on February 2, according to an AP report.

“The execution of those search warrants [on the servers] has now been completed,” said the government letter. “The United States copied selected Mega Servers and copied selected data from some of the other Mega Servers, but did not remove any of the Mega Servers from the premises.

“Now that the United States has completed execution of its search warrants, the United States has no continuing right to access the Mega Servers. The Mega Servers are not in the actual or constructive custody or control of the United States, but remain at the premises controlled by, and currently under the control of, Carpathia and Cogent. Should the defendants wish to obtain independent access to the Mega Servers, or coordinate third-party access to data housed on Mega Servers, that issue must be resolved directly with Cogent or Carpathia. It is our understanding that the hosting companies may begin deleting the contents of the servers beginning as early as February 2, 2012.”

State and local governments resist NDAA detention provisions

For Immediate ReleaseJanuary 26, 2012

Provisions in the National Defense Authorization Act may allow for the indefinite detention of U.S. citizens, but the feds could find they get no cooperation from some state and local officials.

Virginia Delegate Bob Marshall (R-Manassas) introduced HB1160, which would, “Prevent any agency, political subdivision, employee, or member of the military of Virginia from assisting an agency or the armed forces of the United States in the investigation, prosecution, or detainment of a United States citizen in violation of the Constitution of Virginia.”

On Wednesday, a House subcommittee passed the bill 6-3, moving it closer to a full House vote.

And sources close to the Tenth Amendment Center say as many as ten states will consider legislation or resolutions in response to the detention provisions in section 1021 and 1022 of the NDAA. Lawmakers in Rhode Island and Washington will likely introduce resolutions authored by the Rhode Island Liberty Coalition within the next week. Additionally, local governments, including Fremont County, Colo. and El Paso County, Colo., have passed resolution condemning the detention provisions.

“Federal politicians never seem to repeal federal law. It’s going to take ‘We the People’ in our states to stand up and say, ‘No!’ to this unconstitutional monster,” Tenth Amendment Center executive director Michael Boldin said.

The TAC’s legal team developed model legislation addressing the NDAA detention provisions declaring, ”The Legislature finds that the enactment into law by the United States Congress of Sections 1021 and 1022 of the National Defense Authorization Act of 2012, Public Law Number 112-81, is inimical to the liberty, security and well-being of the people of (STATE), and was adopted by the United States Congress in violation of the limits of federal power in United States Constitution”

Tenth Amendment Center communications director Mike Maharrey likens state efforts to stop potential detention of Americans under NDAA to northern states’ refusal to cooperate with fugitive slave laws in the 1850s.

“It is clear to me, and I am far from alone in this view, that the detention provisions in the NDAA are vague, overbroad and open to interpretation. That leaves me to trust in the good character and moral clarity of Barack Obama, Rick Santorum or whoever happens to reside at the White House, to protect me and my fellow Americans from abuse of this power. No thanks.” he said. “During the latter days of slavery, state and local governments in northern states stepped in and thwarted the enforcement of the Fugitive Slave Acts, which allowed the federal government to arrest and detain black people, and send them back into slavery with little or no due process. We laud these men and women as heroes. I have no doubt that history will prove equally kind to those standing up for the most basic rights of Americans today.”

Is Now The Time To Move Away From Major U.S. Cities?

As the U.S. economy falls apart and as the world becomes increasingly unstable, more Americans than ever are becoming "preppers".  It is estimated that there are at least two million preppers in the United States today, but nobody really knows.  The truth is that it is hard to take a poll because a lot of preppers simply do not talk about their preparations.  Your neighbor could be storing up food in the garage or in an extra bedroom and you might never even know it.  An increasing number of Americans are convinced that we are on the verge of some really bad things happening.  But will just storing up some extra food and supplies be enough?  What is going to happen if we see widespread rioting in major U.S. cities like George Soros is predicting?  What is going to happen if the economy totally falls to pieces and our city centers descend into anarchy like we saw in New Orleans during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina?  In some major U.S. cities such as Detroit, looting is already rampant.  There are some sections of Detroit where entire blocks of houses are being slowly dismantled by thieves and stripped of anything valuable.  Sadly, the economy is going to get a lot worse than it is at the moment.  So is now the time to move away from major U.S. cities?  Should preppers be seeking safer locations for themselves and their families?  Those are legitimate questions.

According to a recent Gallup poll, satisfaction with the government is now at an all-time low.  Americans are rapidly losing faith in virtually every major institution in society.

Anger and frustration are rising to very dangerous levels, and we are rapidly approaching a boiling point.

When people feel as though they have lost everything, they get desperate.

And desperate people do desperate things.

In many communities in the United States today, crime has become so terrifying that people are literally sleeping with their guns.

The following is a story from Rancho Cordova, California that one of my readers recently sent me....

When I first moved here, it was not a bad place, it was quiet and clean.

However, over the past three years this place has gone to the dumps there are thugs and unruly people everywhere.

I have prevented two car break-ins by scaring these thugs away.

While I was home on thanksgiving weekend, someone decided to break into my apartment.

They trashed my place stole all my items and even took my law enforcement (LE) vehicle to include my equipment.

I m sure they had been watching me for a while because they did not take items that contained my identification.

Thank god, I had my weapon with me.

In many areas of the country, law enforcement resources are being dramatically cut back due to budget problems at the same time that crime is rapidly rising.

Right now, the city of Detroit is teetering on the verge of bankruptcy.  Officials there recently announced that due to budget constraints, all police stations will be closed to the public for 16 hours a day.  From now on, they will only be open to the public from 8 AM to 4 PM.

But in Detroit the police are needed now more than ever.  The following is what one British reporter found during his visit to Detroit....

Much of Detroit is horribly dangerous for its own residents, who in many cases only stay because they have nowhere else to go. Property crime is double the American average, violent crime triple. The isolated, peeling homes, the flooded roads, the clunky, rusted old cars and the neglected front yards amid trees and groin-high grassland make you think you are in rural Alabama, not in one of the greatest industrial cities that ever existed.

The population of Detroit is less than half of what it used to be.  Over the past few decades people have left in droves, and large sections of the city are in an advanced state of decay.

Not too many people want to buy homes in Detroit now.  At this point, the median price of a home in Detroit is just $6000.

The following video contains some video footage of the "ruins of Detroit" that is hard to believe....

Detroit has become a very scary place.  100 bus drivers in Detroit recently refused to drive their routes out of fear of being attacked on the streets.  The head of the bus drivers union, Henry Gaffney, said that the drivers were literally "scared for their lives"....

“Our drivers are scared, they’re scared for their lives. This has been an ongoing situation about security. I think yesterday kind of just topped it off, when one of my drivers was beat up by some teenagers down in the middle of Rosa Parks and it took the police almost 30 minutes to get there, in downtown Detroit,” said Gaffney.

But it is not just Detroit that is having these kinds of problems.

In Cleveland, over 50 percent of all children are living in poverty and abandoned houses are everywhere.

The city has already demolished about 1,000 homes, and there is a plan to demolish 20,000 more homes.  The following comes from a recent CBS News report by Scott Pelley....

Perfectly good homes, worth 75, 100 thousand dollars or more a couple of years ago, are being ripped to splinters in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio. Here, the great recession left one fifth of all houses vacant. The owners walked away because they couldn't or wouldn't keep paying on a mortgage debt that can be twice the value of the home. Cleveland waited four years for home values to recover and now they've decided to face facts and bury the dead.

Down in St. Louis they have a different problem.  In some of the worst areas of the city, roving packs of wild dogs are a serious threat to children that are walking to school.  A recent report by the local CBS affiliate in St. Louis described the situation this way....

...Lewis Reed is sounding the alarm. "I’ve witnessed packs of dogs, 10 and 15 dogs running together, and I’ve seen all these dogs I’m talking about they don’t have collars, they don’t have tags, these are truly wild dogs," he said.

Reed says stray dogs are terrorizing the north side. "It’s obscene that parents have to walk their kids to school, in some parts of the city, with a golf club to fend off wild dogs."

How would you feel if you had to fend off wild packs of dogs as you walked your child to school?

These kinds of conditions can be found out on the west coast as well.

For example, there is an area of San Francisco that is known as "Hunter's Point" that is an absolute nightmare.  In Hunter's Point, over half of the population lives in poverty and more than half of all children live in a home where there is no father present.  The following is what one reporter discovered on a visit to Hunter's Point....

Abernathy and I cut through the complex, tromping over an expanse of dirt and concrete toward the northeast end of the development, where a row of apartments looked down from a grassy hill. We paused next to a vacant, boarded-over unit to take in the scene: A stream of ****, piss, tampons, and toilet paper spewed from a dark hole in the sidewalk, poured down the hill, and formed a sort of **** lagoon next to the street. Weeds, about six inches tall, were growing in the little lagoon.

Raw ****, obviously, is not cool. Beyond the fact that it smells and looks nasty, fecal matter provides a haven for dangerous bacteria, most notably E. coli, a virulent pathogen that can sicken and even kill humans, especially infants.

When conditions like this reign, it is a prime breeding ground for crime.

In major U.S. cities all over the United States, drug dealing, gang activity and prostitution are on the rise.  The following comes from a recent article in the New York Times....

In November, a terrified 13-year-old girl pounded on an apartment door in Brooklyn. When a surprised woman answered, the girl pleaded for a phone. She called her mother, and then dialed 911.

The girl, whom I’ll call Baby Face because of her looks, frantically told police that a violent pimp was selling her for sex. He had taken her to the building and ordered her to go to an apartment where a customer was waiting, she said, and now he was waiting downstairs to make sure she did not escape. She had followed the pimp’s directions and gone upstairs, but then had pounded randomly on this door in hopes of getting help.

In some major U.S. cities, the gangs have virtually taken over.  In an article entitled "City of Ruins", Chris Hedges described what life is like today in Camden, New Jersey....

There are perhaps a hundred open-air drug markets, most run by gangs like the Bloods, the Latin Kings, Los Nietos and MS-13. Knots of young men in black leather jackets and baggy sweatshirts sell weed and crack to clients, many of whom drive in from the suburbs. The drug trade is one of the city's few thriving businesses. A weapon, police say, is never more than a few feet away, usually stashed behind a trash can, in the grass or on a porch.

As I wrote about the other day, the FBI says that there are now 1.4 million gang members inside this country.  That number has increased by 40 percent since 2009.

Organized criminal behavior by groups of young people is on the rise all over the nation.  Just check out this video which shows a flash mob robbery happening in Montgomery County, Maryland.

Sadly, this is just the beginning.

This country is still enjoying a tremendous amount of prosperity.  We still have a very high standard of living compared to most of the rest of the world.

So how nightmarish are things going to get when the economy gets really bad?

The most frightening thing is when these criminals start invading private homes.

The following home invasion story from Sacramento, California was sent to me by one of my readers a while back....

Somebody got into my sister's house last night while she was out. My mom was upstairs, but didn't hear anything. Whoever it was, they ate some chips and sorted through a stack of maternity clothes my sister had ready for selling on ebay. He left a dirty pair of boxer shorts and a bottom dentures on the dining room table. Fortunately, he was gone when she got home. I'm amazed, but the police actually came out and collected fingerprints and his boxers and false teeth. Probably a homeless guy. He may have switched his dirty boxers for a clean pair of maternity jeans, so the police just have to look for a guy wearing women's maternity pants with no lower teeth.

Because of stuff like this, an increasing number of Americans have decided that it is better to be armed.

The truth is that you never know when you will get jumped.

For example, in Pennsylvania the other day one 65-year-old man was suddenly knocked off his bicycle by three teen thugs.

The 65-year-old man responded by pulling out his gun and shooting two of them.  One of the teens was killed.

Down along the border with Mexico, many ranchers have discovered that a gun battle could potentially erupt on any night.  The federal government has refused to protect the border, and so millions of illegals just keep streaming on in.  The following was recently posted on standwitharizona.com....

Barbed wire fencing doesn’t keep illegal aliens off the property anymore. One Starr County, TX rancher doesn’t have time to worry about the illegals these days. He now worries about the smugglers protecting their loads.

“I don’t think they would have any conscience of taking someone’s life,” the rancher says.

He saw that will to kill firsthand. A smuggler shot at him on his own land.

“One round was fired at me, and it missed my head by about two feet,” says the rancher.

He says there’s only way to react.

“Fire all the rounds you have, reload, and do it again,” says the rancher.

The more stories like this you read, the easier it is to understand why more than 10 million guns were sold in the United States during 2011.

The truth is that you never know when you may need to defend yourself.

This past New Year's Eve, a single mother named Sarah McKinley was home alone with her three-month old son when she discovered that two armed men were trying to invade her home.  If she had not had a gun, there is no telling what might have happened.  The following is from a news story  about that incident....

An Oklahoma woman was recently home with her 3 month old son when two men tried to break in.  Armed with a shot gun and a pistol she called 9-1-1.

Operator: "Are your doors locked?"

Caller: "Yes, I've got two guns in my hand.   Is it ok to shoot him if he comes in this door?"

Operator: "I can't tell you what you can do but you do what you have to do to protect your baby."

The mother did shoot killing one of the intruders.  Oklahoma police called the shooting justified.

What would you have done in that situation?

America is rapidly changing, and we all need to adapt to the new reality all around us.

The truth is that America is not the same place it used to be.  In some U.S. cities, authorities are actually dumping dead bodies into mass graves.

Just check out what the Daily Mail says has been going on in Chicago....

It's a practice more closely associated with third world countries, but in bleak times in a Chicago-area suburb, 30 people were buried in a mass grave on Wednesday.

The pauper's burial section at Homewood Memorial Gardens was established for those who could not afford to pay for a burial plot.

And it is a problem that's sweeping America as tough economic times have led to an increase in the number of indigent burials the morgue must perform.

All over the country, major U.S. cities are flat broke and are rapidly decaying.  They are filled with impoverished people that are rapidly becoming angrier and more frustrated.

There simply are not enough jobs for everyone.  Millions of ordinary Americans spend their days agonizing over the fact that they cannot provide even a basic living for themselves and their families.

And as the economy gets even worse, the economic despair in this country is going to grow to unprecedented levels.

So is now the time to move away from major U.S. cities?

In the end, each of us is going to have to answer that question for ourselves.

Jobs are scarce, so if you have a good job right now it may not be wise to give it up.  It can be incredibly challenging to move to a new area when you don't have a job.

One solution may be to move farther away from your current job so that you are in a more rural setting.  But the rising cost of gasoline can make that a very expensive proposition.

Some families are purchasing second homes that they can "bug out" to in the event of a major disaster or emergency.  But if your financial resources are limited that may not be an option for you.

In the final analysis, you have just got to do the best you can with what you have.

But if you are able to move, it is better to do it while times are relatively stable (like now) than when times are very unstable.

So what do all of you think?

Do you think that now is the time to move away from major U.S. cities?
